In the midst of the turbulence surrounding the ownership of United and its contempt for our fanbase, it would be fair to say that we all applauded the club's ideas to mark the 50th anniversary of the darkest hour in United's history.
The removal of the sponsor logo from the players shirts was, in particular, taken as a sign of sincerity from the club at a time when any recognition of the other wishes of United's fanbase was spectacularly lacking.
As many supporters will now be aware, not only was the club unable to print the correct lyrics to the United Calypso on the K Stand pictorial tribute, but they have also refused to remove the AIG logo from the bottom right hand corner.
The clubs official response to disgusted fans who have contacted the club is as follows;
"The commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash has involved many different groups including the Club's partners.
Each group has chosen to pay tribute in its own way. It is entirely appropriate that a partner as closely involved with the Club as AIG would want to remember that extraordinary team, cut down in its prime ."
Lets dissect this whole sorry matter.
Firstly, the logo, isn't there by accident. The design would have to have been signed off by club officials. Someone within the club management decided this was actually a good idea.
Furthermore, the claim that AIG work closely with the club (and not just bombard us with offers of financial products at every opportunity - no matter how inappropriate) would suggest that should you march into AIG's head office in America, and ask anyone present to name a team member that died that day, they would know what you were talking about - Highly unlikely.
Why also, when the AIG logo will be present at all the usual advertisement sites around the ground, was it ever thought necessary for it to be included in the design?
Why does the branding of an insurance giant, who not so long ago were massively fined for fraudulent accounting practices, need to intrude on this occasion?
Do AIG fear losing a raft of sales enquiries should their logo not be visible on the tribute?
Thoughtful fans will see this shot in the foot by the club regime as being the latest in a line that includes using a previous anniversary and the day of George Best's passing to finally admit to takeover plans, and open an ice rink.
Either the owners and decision makers know nothing of our club's history - most likely - or they do, but simply don't care.
The message from United Supporters is that we DO care, and this sad episode will not be forgotten. |
